Brief History of the Picture Frame:

A picture frame functions as a structure used to present a work of art in the most appealing way. Originally, it was intended to protect and enhance the piece upon which it was placed. However, a frame also adds to the composition of a work of art.During the renaissance, almost all paintings were religious, therefore the frames were used to replicate the architecture of the church. Later on, around the later half of the 18th century we start to see Baroque and Rococo style frames. These were very elaborate as well, but instead of replicating church structure, the were embellished with a more whimsical and lavish style which included carvings of arabesque lines and foliage. As time goes on, the frame becomes simpler and less ornate overall. In contemporary art, we tend to use simple frames of a solid color, often black, wooden or metallic. Of course, there is still an immense range of frames to choose from and the great thing about custom framing is that you can have it your way; from ornate to clean cut, its up to you and how you personally want your piece to stand out. Framing; where craftsmanship meets artistry.
